And what is wrong with that "zoso"? We banged the bloody Irish up for ever in the 1970s and what harm did that do? Now they are just Ordinary Decent Terrorists and quite nice chaps really, apparently, worthy of being ministers in a (admittedly joke) government. Oh, and he lost the bloody vote. Ha ha ha ha aha.
Yes but at least we pretended to put them through a judicial process, and I would point out it only really occured to those who attacked old Blightey. Granted there were a few instances of wrongful prosecution and that should never have happened but these laws will amount to 100 times the public disquite over wrongfully convicted Irishmen.
Also we didn't lock people up for TALKING! or making jokes which not everyone would find funny but they should be able to make in our great free nation, or does no-one remember the old tradition of taking a soap box to speakers corner in Hyde park to speak to the public. Pretty soon you won't be able to do that, in fact if you say the wrong thing, they'll clap you in irons and it'll be off to Bellmarsh with you.
Judicial process? No we didn't. Oi you, you might be in the IRA - in the H-blocks with ya! Sorry if you are now a partnership stakeholder in the governance of the north of Ireland but then you were a, er, terrorist....
As I recall we imprisoned those who had been seen to have comitted acts of terrorism. Also those who were members of the IRA who organised, funded and supplied the IRA. Were there mistakes made? Yes. Do we want to repeat them NO.
IF the government had been allowed to put through the obscene 90 day provisions then we would see many more miscarriages of justice than we did then and how on earth would that help us fight those who would blow themselves up? ANSWER: It wouldnt.
THe government could not, and did not prove that it was nessesary for the police to hold onto Terror suspects for 90 days without charge in order to gather more evidence. Plain and simple, until they assert a real case instead of trying to scare MPs into voting for it I for one will continue to oppose it and continue to speak out against it.
THe Government doesnt have a great track record for "Knowing whats best," does it? THe Iraq war wasnt what was best way to deal with international terrorism after 11th September, and this isnt the best way to deal with terrorism after 7th July London bombings.
Don't want to press this point further, but it was not people who were "seen to have committed acts of terrorism". If that was the case they would have been prosecuted. No, we just banged them up anyway.
The fact is that the VAST majority of the Irish we DID bang up ARE guilty, we won and we'll win again, but we need to beat them on our terms not on theres. They would love nothing else than the British govt. to start banging up Muslims because they are muslims and not because there is substantial evidence to do do. We require legislation that gives the Police enough power to detain those they suspect yet does not infringe the decent mans life. This is NOT what Labours legislation was doing.
The SUN newspapers headline this morning was "TRAITORS." They are asking all of us to tell them what we think of the MPs that voted against the 90 day detention of terror suspects, I say BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO. It is bad legislation which we can do without. Voting for it would have been completely the WRONG thing to do and I for one salute every one of the MPs who did vote nay to defeat the Government.

slightly off topic: has Browns air miles, breached part 1 section 4 of the ministerial code.
Given he did not conclude any Government business on this trip, but is returning on Labour Party business, should he pay for this flight himself.
Bleary's gone all blurry!
