Very quickly blogs such as Guido's took a deliberatley cynical and antagonistic attitude to traditional 'establishment' bodies such as the government and the BBC. Of course this doesn't follow the BBC script so they're frantically back peddling, for example refusing to acknowledge when blogs are making the running.
For the BBC, blogs are ok as long as they discuss harmless twattish issues. As soon as they present a threat they are to be ignored or ridiculed.

The fact is political think tanks of all colours use charitable status - and this has been allowed because political thinking (as opposed to gossip and other dross on websites such as this) is thought to be a good thing for a democracy (we could of course try other models which you and your friends might favour) - and I predict that this will be the Charity Commissioners conclusion after you have wasted much of your own and their time.
