We have had too many long term Prime Ministers since 1979. Thatcher, Major and Blair all stayed on too long.
I hope Brown does not become a fourth long term (more than one Parliament) Prime Minister.
What we really need is a series of Parliaments without a single party majority. After a generation of minority governments and shifting coalitions hopefully the Imperial Prime Ministership will be well and truly cut down to its proper size.
Minority Parliaments also have the advantage of restoring the House of Commons to its primacy in the political system. A Prime Minister with no assured majority, facing the constant risk of defeat, would have to be more responsive to public and parliamentary opinion than one who is almost unchallengeable in the House of Commons.
Above all else politics would be more interesting than the sterile wasteland think tanks and ministers occupy today.

Blair is trying his utmost to drop Levy in it, but isn't he playing with fire?
You would think that, being a lawyer, Tony would know that lying to PC Plod is not a wise thing to do (not when there's evidence to the contrary anyway)
The Times claims Lord Levy's testimony was contradicted by Tony Blair, who allegedly said he did not have "full knowledge" of secret loans to the Labour Party.
Lord Levy had claimed in a written statement that Mr Blair knew about his dealings with lenders.
He will now come under intense pressure to explain how and when he told Mr Blair about the loans, and any subsequent knowledge of nominations for peerages.
If he provides evidence of conversations with the Prime Minister, Mr Blair could be interviewed again as a potential suspect under caution.
Sources said that Mr Blair told Scotland Yard detectives that he was unaware of certain details of specific nominations for peerages, who was lending money to Labour, and in what capacity.
Lord Levy is expected to be interviewed again in the new year, while other key figures may also face further questions.

Guido, credit where it is due, I was wrong about this. I thought the fact the story here is complex would mean that El Gordo wouldn't be rumbled. The fact that it is on the front page of the Saturday Telegraph tells us a different story.
Although cynic that I am, I think Peter 'Mandy' Mandelson and Michael 'Lord' Levy may between them have helped massage it into the main stream press.
Tomorrow's Mail on Sunday 'leak' [yeah, right..] suggests a 'shock and awe' campaign is underway to unseat the rider at the head of the field for the Labour leadership...

And I'm standing in the darkness
I don't want to wait no more
if you take a look at a few more think tanks/charities, you will probably find out the same thing happens. a big sum for a meeting with a minister organised by the middletank.
If Levy goes down he's determined to take Blair with him and if Blair goes down he's determined to take Brown with him.
Delicious!
By then, I had learned in westiminster that Gordon Brown knew all about the secret loans affair. I learned this at breakfast from my morning paper when I read:
GORDON BROWN DENIES ALL KNOWLEDGE OF LOANS AFFAIR
(aplogies to Joseph Heller)
Gordon's Girl 'Red" Dawn strikes again:
Major IT error at the Revenue:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/moneybox/6184519.stm
"Hundreds of thousands of people have been wrongly told they have a tax records gap that may cut their pension."
Brown to Wilf - "Give Balls a Sith job pending his election as MP, he needs about £100k to tide him over. Diageo and EMI would like to slip me a 'research bung'for services to be rendered so use this to finance Ed. #11 free for you to use, check with Sue."
Whats wrong with that. Loyalty has its rewards. Just a form of Nectar.
12.51pm You say Baronees Rendell is to investigate the think-tank - does this mean that Inspector Wexford is on the case?
I think the photo caption contest would work better if you stuck a picture of Hercules Poirot in at the head of the table. He could be saying: "This is one of those "Murder on the Orient Express" cases - you are all guilty.
Guido the censor. What a tosser!
Caption: Guido's on to us Gentlemen, to the reichschancellery bunker and don't forget your cyanide!
Caption: I have provided you all with cyanide capsules, if Gordon decides to give a speech please do not hesitate to use them, it will be merciful release.

Blog of the year

There is no doubt about it, Guido Fawkes is blog of the year. His mischievous mix of gossip and insight has moved recently into major league as he has exposed sleaze and hypocrisy in high places. If you are not a regular reader, maybe you should be. It is usually informative and always entertaining. With his exposé of cash for honours, complete with the embarrassing details, plus the shenanigans of John Prescott, he has the government reeling on the ropes, if not down on the canvas. He has in effect taken on the role of official opposition, which is fine for the Conservatives because it leaves them free to rebuild their brand and prepare to take over. Political and media figures devour his blog every day, and it's easy to see why. It's compulsive reading.
The picture is oddly reminiscent of the last supper.
Woman on Left : "Our next table is an aircaft carrier."
Lackey behind column in background: "Do I have time to get popcorn before the movie starts?"
