I was under the impression that an IQ test should be designed so that the results fit a normal bell curve centred on 100 -- a mean value of 100 and an equal number of respondants on either side of that.
A symmetric normal distribution has the same mean and median.
The IQ distribution may be roughly normal, but it cannot be symmetrical, since there exist people with IQ greater than 200, but few (outside Labour bloggers anyway) with negative IQ.
However, this doesn't allow us to make any assertion about mean IQs.

Anyway it's meaningless to compare IQs !=100 unless you specify the scale. If I say the temperature is 30 degrees - is that hot or cold? Depends whether I'm talking in Centigrade, Farenheit or Kelvin.
No point in saying my IQ is e.g 95 since that could mean "only slightly" or "very much" below average, depending on the scale.
Percentile scores are much more useful for making comparisons.

Haha, This would be in contrast to the part-time workers on a full-time wage that the unions are only too keen to defend? For example, traffic lights maintenance workers (they change the bulbs) on £91,000 a year in Birmingham -- even though they've been off sick for the last 12 months. Not to mention those that paint the white lines on the roads for £51,000 a year.

Could you please enlighten my feeble mind, when you say "AVERAGE IQ is 100, not the mean", to which kind of average are you then refering: mode or median? I was under the impression that an IQ test should be designed so that the results fit a normal bell curve centred on 100 -- a mean value of 100 and an equal number of respondants on either side of that.

A symmetric normal distribution has the same mean and median.
The IQ distribution may be roughly normal, but it cannot be symmetrical, since there exist people with IQ greater than 200, but few (outside Labour bloggers anyway) with negative IQ.
However, this doesn't allow us to make any assertion about mean IQs.

The Bell curve is symetric -- the IQ you get allocated after sitting a test isn't how many answers you got right, it is derived from where your right answers rank you in the sample group. If you are half way down the list you get 100, if you are at the top you get more. The Bell curve normally used gives about 68% of the respondants an IQ of between 85 and 115, 95% between 70 and 130. Being that for the curve to be useful you need a large number of people in each group, you don't get people with IQs of 200 in standard tests. Present company excepted, of course.

Anyway it's meaningless to compare IQs !=100 unless you specify the scale. If I say the temperature is 30 degrees - is that hot or cold? Depends whether I'm talking in Centigrade, Farenheit or Kelvin.
No point in saying my IQ is e.g 95 since that could mean "only slightly" or "very much" below average, depending on the scale.
Percentile scores are much more useful for making comparisons.
