Not very inspiring so far. Sounds good but nothing special.

Good point about not expecting the state do everything. But nothing about shrinking it.

Webcameron is great because it really pisses people off!!! More more more..

he will not be silenced. Don't you just love it. The media want to get him under their control so badly they could scream, but he's just keeping on and sticking to his agenda, and if the media want to back him that's fine. If they don't that's fine too because the agenda is going to happen anyway. After ten years of media and politics being locked together in a toxic embrace, cameron is saying, 'enough is enough. Listen to what I am saying. Report it fairly or get out of my way. He's going to get his message across whther the media likes it or they don't.

Politics is being liberated by an army or bloggers and Cameron's right there amongst the fray refusing to bow down to Murdoch, the Daily mail or any other dinosaurs of the dead tree media era. Fantastic.

Can he walk on water too?

Did he say something as cheesy as "let sunshine win the day" or had I nodded off by that point?

I love you David Cameron.

I thought Tapestry was OTT, but he/she is definitely a lot more preferable and in the right than the ghost of Peter who really is a prize cunt.

McCain is as likely to be the next US President as Ronald Reagan is...............my money is on Mitt Romney

I didn't say you were OTT and you don't offend although I do think you are a complete idiot.

That's what the sergeant major called me at school until he had second thoughts. 'No you're not,' he said. 'c***s are useful.

Mitt Rommey hasn't a snowball's chance in hell. I don't think a Mormon from New England and a political panderer is getting any steam at all. That's just stupid.

McCain's best thing is having the press in love with him, due to his acceptance of the cable news humor circut and always being available - vey nice for journos. And a very lazy narrative.

But its all fakery, and after he's done being photographed awkwardly hugging Bush, (the guy who suggested in South Carolina that he fathered a black child out of wedlock and his wife wasa drug addict), pandering to the Theocons at Bob Jones university, and the press takes a closer look at the recent compromise where a guy who was tortured by the Viet Cong caved to an unpopular White HOuse on torture, the "reinterpretation" of Geneva Article Three, and giving up of Habeus (thanks Magna Carta! and Constitution! but no thanks!), the glow will be off.

To quote Steven Colbert, "John McCain is here. John McCain, John McCain, what a maverick. Somebody find out what fork he used on his salad, because I guarantee you it wasn’t a salad fork. He could have used a spoon! There’s no predicting him. So wonderful to see you coming back into the Republican fold. I have a summer house in South Carolina; look me up when you go to speak at Bob Jones University. So glad you’ve seen the light.

"We are not going anywhere with Cameron."

Yes you are. It's called the Left.

Once again, Tony Blair is being proved correct (as if you ever doubted it!!).

Your party is going to collapse into a touchy feely quagmire, afarid to say boo to new Labour's goose AND you are going to lose the enxt election. Oh happy days.

Your boy's been shown to have a glass jaw.

It was St Peters actually!!!

But your fantasies exceed the realities. Not cameron though. His ideas are really useful.

"I can explain it one word. That word is optimism. I am optimistic about human nature. That's why I will trust people to do the right thing. Labour are pessimists. They think that without their guidance, people will do the wrong thing. That's why they want to regulate and control. So let us show clearly which side we are on. Let optimism beat pessimism. Let sunshine win the day."

Amazing. Traditional small-c conservatism completely base over apex.

Socialists follow Rousseau or Pelagius. Man is perfectible, paradise is attainable here on earth. Optimistic.(of course, as fallen man fails to live up to his high billing, they become more authoritarian ...)

Conservatives see man as an imperfect, fallen creature. Pessimistic. Minimising harm rather than maximising good. Accept that man's selfishness, lusts and greed are always with us, try and socialise it as best we may. Invisible hand and all that.

The man's a revolutionary !

What are they?

"Give people more responsiblity" will be the reply.

So why doesn't he allow us to spend our own money how we want?

Because the Tories, like Labour, are essentially a statist party obsessed with trying to run our lives for us even when we don't want them to.

At 9pm on the day that Dave won the Tory leadership contest he was photographed shopping alone at Tescio in Holland Park.

Ever since then I have been wondering whether it was a set up and his spinmeisters deliberately wanted him to be snapped there.

You forget it will not be Blair to Cameron it will be slit your wrists Brown or worse to Cameron in 3-4 years time. When many peoples personal econemy and Gordons national book cooking exercise, will be both down the Swany.

Hitchins will you please stop talking like you once voted Conservative, because if you did, you were voting for the wrong political party anyway. David Cameron is more of a Tory then you will ever be.

If you ever do join the Conservative Party please find out what a Conservative is supposed to believe first. Or just run along and vote for your beloved BNP, and spare us the ad hominem insults.

No Longer anonymous. did you actually listen to cameron at all today?

It was gordon who has parted you from your money. and it will be dave who gets you and your money back together again - once the public services are stabilised and reformed.

then the sun will shine for you too, once the dark labour days are lifted by a Conservative victory.

refrain
'through the night of doubt and sorrow.....singing songs of expectation, marching to the promised land'

It's the same old song but with a different meaning since Maggie's been gone.

Dave will reunite us with our money? Amazing. How blind can you get? I guess it doesn't matter how many times he says he will not cut taxes, you will still get Tories effectively going "oh he will, he's just lying to get into office".

Perry de Havilland sums up Cameron beautifully on Samizdata:

"Dave Cameron has been both consistent and explicit about what he stands for and anyone who thinks "it is hard to know what the Conservative Party stands for at the moment" must be hard of hearing. It stands for regulatory statism, high taxes and Euro-Federalism. In short, if you want to know what the 'Conservative' Party stands for under Dave Cameron, you have but to look at Britain for the last nine years under 'Tony' Blair. The Tory Party stands for continuity with Blair-ism, just with a fresh set of managers with their hands on the helm.

If you like what Blairism (or 'radical centrism' if you like) has done to Britain but want a fresh Blairite in control, Dave Cameron has made it crystal clear that he is your man."

You seem to believe that I want efficiently run public services. In fact, I don't want any public services except the army. If I didn't have monarchist sympathies I'd probably be an anarcho-capitalist.

There is a fine line between optimism and naivety.......

For example an (naive) optimistic person seeing the good in the hoodie trying to mug him will attempt to hug him, and get stabbed in the gut -

the pessimist (worldly wise) however will kick the bstrd in the balls and leg it gut and wallet in tact!

The comments on this blog have really started to go downhill. Guido needs to give all you lot a big slap.

Cameron's being sensible. Taking about tax cuts 3years before an election is just plain stupid. There may be room for it certainly, but he needs to be sure that he gets it right.

People require faith that public service will not get any worse than they have under the overinvestment and underachivment of this Labour party.

Promising something now, then having to be held to it 3 years down the line is making yourself a hostage to fortune.

It looks like Cameron is playing the long game...good luck to him. Otherwise we get that dour scot twat.

As a long time observer of British politics (starting with a Nye Bevan speech off the back of a truck to c3000 people in a field during the 45 election) I thought Cameron`s speech made some telling and valid points.

Stability before tax cuts makes sense to the millions on mortgages and up to their eyeballs in debt; people on fixed incomes fear inflation at least as much as taxes - why do you think pensioners are up in arms about council tax? Somehow I think council tax increases conveniently fall outside calculations of the rate of inflation. Someone should check out the implications of the no less than three definitions of inflation we have "enjoyed" under Buggins Brown. The definition bears only a passing relevance to many peoples experience; even the Bank of England seems to have its doubts.

No doubt a powerful case can be made for saying that tax cuts encourage growth and should come first, but it is not a strong political case - Cameron would then open himself to attack on "cuts" in schools and hospitals and "back to boom and bust".

Meantime Cameron`s graveyard metaphor, attacking Blair`s many failed initiatives, was spot on.

No longer anonymous doesn't want any public service other than the army...not the Police?

I hope this long review into policing that Cameron is undertaking will make police more local and more accountable to local people.THAT was the great success and keystone of the British Police Service.

To have totally private police means a credit card service which means that the poor and poor estates will get poor policing standards.

No longer anonymous is typical of many who consider themselves middleclass and do not want, at any cost, to help those less fortunate.

A independent Police, servants of the Crown, is the only way forward.

It is a perfect sculpture. Made of infinitely clear glass each intricately modelled surface is designed such that the refractive index created renders the sculpture entirely invisible.

It is housed in a hermetically sealed bell jar and is a joy to behold as it is all things to all people and yet is absolutely nothing at all.

The exhibit can currently be viewed in Bournemouth accompanied by some stage effects involving smoke and mirrors.

Lokks like most people missed this part of the speech:
LABOUR'S APPROACH

Think of any issue - not just crime - and then think of Labour's response.

This Government's way of doing things - the old way of doing things - is so familiar, and so depressing.

Ministers hold a summit.

They announce an eye-catching initiative.

A five-year plan.

Gordon Brown generously finds the money for it.

The money gets a headline, but no-one knows what to do with it.

So they create a unit in the Cabinet Office.

A task force is set up.

Regional co-ordinators are appointed.

Gordon Brown sets them targets - after all, it is his money.

Pilot schemes are launched.

The pilot schemes are rolled out across the country.

They are evaluated.

Then revised, re-organised and re-launched.

And then finally, once the reality dawns that the only people to benefit are the lawyers, accountants and consultants of Labour's quango army…

…with a pathetic whimper - but no hint of an apology - the whole thing is just abandoned.

We've seen too much of this in the past nine years.

Headline after headline but absolutely no follow-through.

It is a story of ignorance, incompetence, arrogance.

A story of wasted billions - and disappointed millions.

Somewhere out there, there is a place where Blair and Brown will never go.

It's dark.

It's depressing.

It's haunted by the failures of nine years of centralisation, gimmick and spin.

It is the graveyard of initiatives, where you'll find the e-University that died a death,
the drugs czar that came and went…

…the Individual Learning Accounts that collapsed in fraud and waste, the tax credits that were paid and reclaimed…

…the Connexions service that flopped, the Strategic Health Authorities that were dropped…

…the marching of yobs to the hole in the wall; the night courts that never happened at all.

And still they keep coming, those hubristic monuments to big government, the living dead that walk the well-trodden path from Downing Street and the Treasury to New Labour's graveyard of initiatives.

The NHS computer: delayed, disorganised, a £20 billion shambles.

Forced police mergers: the direct opposite of the community policing we need.

And then the perfect example.

ID cards.

When a half-way competent government would be protecting our security by controlling our borders…

…these Labour ministers are pressing ahead with their vast white elephant, their plastic poll tax, twenty Millennium Domes rolled into one giant catastrophe in the making.

They've given up trying to find a good reason for it.

Last week Tony Blair said that ID cards would help control immigration, when new immigrants won't even have them.

Does he even know what's going on in his Government?

ID cards are wrong, they're a waste of money, and we will abolish them.

These last nine years have been the story of a Government which instinctively believes, whatever it says, that everything is the state's responsibility.

We believe in social responsibility.

Because there is such a thing as society, it's just not the same thing as the state.
If you p[romise tax cuts now you leave yourself exposed to the MSM usual criticism "where will you find the money, tories to scrap public serices , boom-bust cycle" , and you may look ridiculous once you open the books (and who knows what is hiding in there after 10 years of mismanaged spending) and you find that the situation is much worse than expected and you are unable to cut unless you reform spending first.

Anonymous said...

"ID cards are wrong, they're a waste of money, and we will abolish them."

Bet they don't.

Cameron's rhetoric may be all about social responsibility etc but I just don't believe he will roll back the state. Most people are addicted to handouts. Most people don't care about government deficits because they are in debt themselves and see no problem.

Unfortunately cutting taxes is an election losing proposition because people will reason that if Labour spent billions on public services which essentially stood still in terms of performance, then what would happen if funding was cut? The only politically acceptable way to save tax-payers cash is to increase spending at less than the rate of inflation - that way you can claim to be increasing spending but actually cutting back in real terms.

Cameroon made a huge mistake. To show how daring and different he is he could have turned up in morning dress ( his alma mater unifrom after all). Gordo will never wear this and it helps to show Cameron is willing to be 'challenging' in all situations...

Cameron is nothing but a youthful face and bunch of faux-liberal lies stuck onto the old, old Tory party of pre-1997. All the things you think he stands for will fall by the wayside once Tories get back into government. Please, everyone, don't fall for his appeal to the young person's vote. He has a lot of clever people sculpting his image and ideologies, they are not his own, and this webcameron project is nothing but a part of that. Look at Cameron and the architects of his image, then look at all the people behind them in the Tory party and ask yourselves if you really truly want them back in government. If you're concerned about the environment, about society, about all the things Cameron pretends to be concerned about, you should really be thinking to vote elsewhere, or for no party at all, NOT the Tories.
