Blair - No10. up early to start work on Alan Johnson's campaign.
Gordon - FO. Thinks he will announce pulling out of middle east.
this is b*****ks, UN Sec-Gen, absolutely not. My money is on the President of Latvia, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, who has been quietly lobbying (she is also Canadian by upbringing) for ages now, and she has secured Riga as the venue for the NATO summit in November.
Although I haven't discussed this with Her Majesty I'd like to sort out the constitutional position once and for all. The Queen does not get her political information from the media like the rest of us, she gets it from her Prime Minister. It's up to Blair to go to the palace and inform her that he no longer commands a majority in parliament and to tender his resignation, which she would accept. Alternatively he can, if he wishes, tender his resignation because he is no longer the leader of his party, and this she would also accept. But she is not going to take the initiative and sack him just because she has just read something in the Racing Post about a Labour Party election contest. It's Blair's call.
The convention is that the PM must be the person who can command a majority in the House of Commons. Should Tony Blair lose the confidence of the House (which could happen if Brown was elected but not immediately appointed PM and called a confidence motion), he would have to resign and Brown would be sent for.
Ignorant peasant: The power to appoint the PM is one of three Royal Prerogatives which are accepted as belonging to the Sovereign personally* and can thus (in exceptional circumstances) be exercised against the advice of the PM.
* The other two are Royal Assent and the power to dissolve Parliament.

How about this for a conspiracy theory? Bliar hangs on until Her Maj passes on to the next world, before declaring the end of the constitutional monarchy (perhaps with the aid of a rigged Diana inquest report) and the appointment of a President...with guess who as the first holder of office. Not really likely either, but I bet he has thought of it.

My point is that the 'exceptional circumstances' in which the queen would sack Blair against his wishes are not envisaged here. If he continues to command a majority he has a constitutional right to remain in office until he he chooses to go.
Her Maj expects her privy councillors to sort this sort of thing out between themselves and not to bother her unduly, especially during the shooting season.

Gordon - FO. Thinks he will announce pulling out of middle east.
That's the gossip I have today.
this is b*****ks, UN Sec-Gen, absolutely not.

I wonder if Brown in No.10 would affect our "special relationship" with America, you know, the one that lets our troops do all the dangerous stuff in the wars they start while they put tariffs on our steel.
UN sec Gen? No chance.
I think he's gonna run for US Presidency - and he might just win. That'd show us!
I doubt this cunning plan would work, although I am sure it has been considered. He is unlikely to survive the next session of Parliament uscathed.

You really do come across as a bunch of saddos. I'm sure you're not really, but you just come across like that. Do you really believe that the massed ranks of the (mainstream) media is just going to say 'Ah, he got us, we didn't read the small print. So he's staying for the full term lads. Let's see what Rooney's up to'...? He wasn't announcing a legal contract yesterday. And there will be much more jiggery pokery. But please, some perspective...
Blair`s a survivor and I think the most enduring legacy of this little girly spat will be that Brown`s come across as a devious, petty, slimey individual and it`s probably stuffed his chances of becoming pm.He`s just not attractive in any way to the average voter.Blair`s going anyway,Brown`s hurry to nudge him out quicker has back-fired badly and just shown him up for what he is.
Just a thought, the signees of the letter that started all the fuss were described as "Blair Loyalists" in the media.Maybe they are, maybe fatboy`s been "Mandelsoned" and that grin was the one of a person who`s not yet realised he`s fallen for an ambush hook, line and sinker.I dont suppose Blair`s really too upset about getting out of the Hornet`s nest a.s.a.p. and if he can pull the carpet from under the feet of Brown on the way out all well and good.Probably got his sucessor of choice lined up and once it`s become obvious that Brown`s totally blown it look for the "rebels" to be welcomed back into the fold, probably after Blair`s exit so as not to be too obvious.
No way can Blair ever be forgiven for Iraq.he faces a inochet future if he doesn't emigrae to the US.
