"and will then be asked questions by Michael Portillo"

Am I alone in having been left feeling nauseous by that phrase?

It makes me want to reach for the revolver that I used to have before the shower of shit whom claim to represent us ordered it to be confiscated.
Why is that smarmy ,poisonous treacherous doesnt know if he is Arthur or Martha reptile having a say in who gets to be the candidate for Battersea ?
I will never vote Conservative again.

And the result is:

Cleverly
Gyimah
Bagshawe
Ellison.

The witch will come last because she looks like Widdecombe's younger sister.

Theo Spark said...

Louise Bagshawe admits to voting for Blair twice. How the hell did she get into this 'race', she is obviously politically dodgy (albeit highly shaggable) and is a perfect example of why we must end women's suffrage.

Anonymous said...

6/4 Gyimah (good backstory, CCHQ's man)
6/4 Ellison (experienced, moderate)
3/1 Bagshawe (Too soon)
5/1 Cleverly

(121% overround, I know. A boy's gotta eat.)

Anonymous said...

Are you doing a liveblog of Tony's speech?

Anonymous said...

Ellison is not moderate, she is a leftist extremist in Tory terms and could split the association down the middle.

Anonymous said...

I thought it was tomorrow night? (Maybe I've been misled.)

Anonymous said...

It IS tomorrow night, 7.00pm for 7.30pm start.

Register in advance on 020 8944 0378.

Guido Fawkes said...

Ooops, corrected.

Anonymous said...

Ellison is out of the question.
Bagshawe is shaggable but the sin of voting for Bliar.
The others I couldn't give a toss about. Linton gets re-eloected by default with a majority of 1.
Women's suffrage isn't fit for purpose....Backwards not forwards.

Anonymous said...

Bagshaw was a labour party member and Blair fan (suited to Cameron)but the picture is, to say the least, flattering.

Either Sam's the man, or it's a Clever choice.

Jan can forget it - too many of us know her faults from Oxford.

But Portiloo - why oh why is he involved - a serial, unpopolar, looser.

Anonymous said...

No doubt Jane Ellison is screwed because she seems to have a pragmatic disposition toward Europe.

Surely that doesnt wash with the right wing Europhobes that dominate in todays Conservative Party.

AntiCitizenOne said...

"pragmatic disposition toward Europe" = 9 billion a year bill for the U.K. mostly to pay for the CAP, which 60% goes on France.

The EUSSR is a wreck lets trade with the world, not the increasingly irrelevant socialist eurowreck.

Stan Bull said...

Well, at least, Cleverly didn't go to Oxford. 'stands in his favour. The other candidates are truly wretched. Except for Bagshawe, nudge nudge, wink, wink, Say no more.

Anonymous said...

So Ellison is a TRG-er, that 'ultra-factional' organisation....unlike, say, CFB, eh Guido???!!!

Anonymous said...

Bagshawe never voted labour, she was a member of the Labour party for a year but didnt vote for them

Stan Bull said...

Bagshawe has openly admitted to voting Labour in '97 and 2001. Just go to her (dire)website.

Average guy on the street said...

"Women's suffrage isn't fit for purpose....Backwards not forwards."

I think it's more backwards if we didn't have women's suffrage.

So bagpuss voted for Blair twice in the last 10 years and shes made it to the last four to represent the Tories, my god they must be more desperate than i thought !!!!!

Bagshawe did not vote for Blair twice, or even once. In 1997 she was an activist for the Tories in the council elections, in 2001 a Tory activist in the general election. It's on ConHome somewhere.

She says she joined NuLab for a couple of months, but was back doorknocking for the Tories by 1997 and afterwards

Anonymous said...

Ahem - someone trying to smear Bagshawe again, eh? She didn't vote Labour in 1997 and 2001, and here are her comments from Conservative Home.

--

Hmmmm: You have put your hand up to having voted Labour in 1997 and 2001. How did you vote in 2005, and what is to stop you crossing the floor again under a different leader?

No, I haven’t! I did join New Labour, but only briefly ten years ago. I was a Tory activist all through our wilderness years. In 2001 I was campaigning for our PPC in the Wrekin as well as my Mum in the county council elections – she won her seat off a LibDem!

I have a whole life in the Conservative party, starting at 14. I got suckered by Tony Blair – he talked about low taxes, Tory spending levels, and he paid tribute to Thatcher, while our party was dissolving in in-fighting and flirting with the Euro via the ERM. But millions of Tory voters were similarly deceived – and we can’t demonise the mistake of the very people we want to win back.

--

And here's Dan Hannan's comment:

It is monstrously unfair that Louise has somehow become a symbol of what people dislike about the A-list. She is a long-standing and deeply committed Tory. I knew her as an undergraduate, when she was an active supporter of the Oxford University Conservative Association and of the Campaign for an Independent Britain. Yes, she flirted briefly with Labour during the 1990s, but that was following the calamity of the Major administration, for Heaven's sake. The miracle was that as many as 30 per cent of the electorate voted Tory in 1997: I had to nerve myself to do it, and I'm a Conservative politician!

The true Bagshawe is as she appears here: thoughtful and bright, hard-working and energetic, patriotic without being over-the-top, a devoted mother and a talented novelist. It'll be a lucky Association that gets her.

Anonymous said...

Adapting Blackadder...

Me: I would never vote for Ellison.

You: Why?

Me: I've met her.

Guido Fawkes said...

Hannibal - corrected thanks.

Anonymous said...

Maude! Cameron! The Primaries are a good vehicle for selection.

The Tory party's problem is in the priority list procedure and the
candidates who are given the full run for success. This has been fully discussed everywhere to date.

I agree with the thoughts put forward by a blogger on this thread that the Tory Party will be accused of creating "ROTTEN ASSOCIATIONS OR ROTTEN CONSTITUENCIES" because the Primaries can only choose from a cronified list.

The party will not break into a 20% lead in the polls until you are open to meritocracy.GRASSROOT MEMBERS ARE GOING QUIET AND UNINVOLVED.

Anonymous said...

Who says politics in this country is Londoncentric ?

Anonymous said...

The personal attacks on Jane Ellison are disgusting. She's a hard-working and loyal Conservative and I hope she is selected tomorrow night; she will make a fine constituency MP.

Anonymous said...

Jane Ellison would make a fine PPC in Tottenham. Is Richard Balfe missing Brussels/Strasbourg?

Anonymous said...

An admirably loyal defence of Ellison, JH, as we should expect from a fellow Tottenham veteran and Ken Clarke supporter.

When we in Battersea want advice on how to win elections from those in the party who have previously been suspended for Tory Boy attacks on the homeless and the elderly, you will be the first person we approach.

In the meantime...

Anonymous said...

Hinchcliffe, pipe down. You'll only bring us bad publicity.

Anonymous said...

JE was, of course, the Tory candidate at the Tottenham bye election in 2000 after Bernie Grant snuffed it.
Second time lucky for JE in Tottenham perhaps??

Ken said...

The TRG is factional and divisive, Guido? Maybe that would explain why Cameron is patron of the Oxford Uni TRG!

Anonymous said...

Do we know how the voting works? Is it first past the post or does a candidate require 50% of the votes? Does the weakest candidate get knocked out and another vote be taken?? Suggestions on tactical voting please.

Croydonian said...

James and Jane have both stood for Parliament, and James is a sitting councillor. What of the other two?

Anonymous said...

I would like to thank John Prescott's tiny pianist for his warm words and support.

Anonymous said...

JPTP, I am sorry that you have not had any contact from the Conservatives but, as you say, you're not in my constituency. You may wish to visit your local Association's website at www.hwgca.org.uk And, no, I was not a Parliamentary candidate. So who are you?

Anonymous said...

John Prescott's tiny pianist raises a valid point on the non-existence of Toryism in large tracts of NE London and the emergence of a certain fringe party. 'wonder why that could be...

Anonymous said...

Rumour has it that Newsnight's Michael Crick is a resident in Battersea and is aiming to attend the "bun fight".

Anonymous said...

Guido, one thing to come from your blogs is that I have discovered that I can not support the conservatives in the future. It is difficult to explain but I am now partyless.

Anonymous said...

Yes I agee and I blame the chis chis of BATTERSEA.I will be following you, as the party now makes me feel sick.

Anonymous said...

Why on earth is standing for parliament and losing sufficient credentials to be our candidate in Battersea. We want a winner - JC alienates people sorry but he gets up their noses - Jane same thing sorry sweetie you aren't going to do it on the doorstep - but guess what Louise is as focused and driven as they come and holds core conservative values (and yes the photo is a bit flattering sorry to disappoint you letchers out there who fantasise about her doing it on the door step) and Sam well laid back cool and no one minds too much about him so not a disadvantage. But plse arrogant arsie up your nose mr not so clever well no thank you very much.

Anonymous said...

Jane take it all back you look much better on your website than guido's photo the hair do is great - but was it really a good idea to have picture of you posing with Anne Widdecombe and what is all this about the countryside - do you know where battersea is...? We talk about Battersea Park being uplifting not hill walking and the accessibility of the countryside what???? Some of your would be constituents don't have cars and have never been to the countryside sorry different world here - welcome to an urban inner city constituency.

On the grounds that Sam made the first round by default then Louise gets i

Looks as if Jane Ellison has sparked a bit of a nerve amongst all those old right-wing factionalists who hate the fact that the party is coming round to her way of thinking! She'd be a nightmare for Labour in Battersea, but those desperate Blairites could all go along and vote for their old mucker Louise Bagshaw, I guess.

Anonymous said...

Battesea resident .......

What is all this about the countryside?????????? Ok which adviser at CCHQ told Jane that the countryside was a good idea in Battersea oh dear oh dear do they want you to lose too?

Eh? Last time I looked they were modernising the party, not running back to the old style noblesse oblige and pro-Euro fanatisicsm of TRG patrician politicos.

Anonymous said...

Jane Ellison has sex appeal! She'd go down well on the doorsteps.

Anonymous said...

James

All the best for tonight (Wednesday) - keep smiling

Anonymous said...

Hannibal - "not running back to old style noblesse oblige"??

you think? So that's why the Tories have elected an Old Etonian as leader for the first time in decades. You're absolutely right! We're definitely running from our successful past!

Anonymous said...

Bit of an oxymoron in the Cleverly description "Londoner" & "nice guy".

Anyone but the Londoner. London surely deserves better. Or the non Oxford candidate. They don't teach much there except buggery, which come to think of it is an ideal qualification for the modern conversatives. Queer and clueless ? That could be the new party slogan.

I should charge for this.

Anonymous said...

Disgusted from Battersea,

We were being more polite than normal.

Anonymous said...

Sacherverell - the point is he was ELECTED, he wasn't appointed, he didn't emerge, he was ELECTED. He had to earn the right in a field of candidates. Being an OE had nothing to do with it.

Anonymous said...

so meany people keep whinging on here about closed voting and people being kept out etc. Do they no understand the system that is being imposed on all constituencies by CCO? Out of the three routes open primary is the one that a) gives most people most say and b) imposes the least quotas on choice of candidates. Stop accusing Battersea of being Cameroons in their approach, we have done the best we can from within stringent Central office rules. RULES i.e. if we could we'd like to select from an absolutely open list but that just isn't possible.

Anonymous said...

So who exactly was Bagshawe supporting while living in New York?

Anonymous said...

Croydonian - James and Jane have both stood for Parliament.

Ellison stood in the Labour seat of Pendle, the 79th Tory target in 2005. Not a great result:

2001 – Conservatives in Pendle = 33.9%

2005 – Conservatives in Pendle = 31.8%

Cleverly stood in the Labour seat of Lewisham East in 2005:

2001 – Conservatives in Lewisham East = 23.8%

2005 – Conservatives in Lewisham East = 24.1%

--

So should we go with the one who lessens the Tory vote?

Anonymous said...

Bagshawe flew back from New York to campaign during the election for which she was away

Anonymous said...

If Bagshawe danced nude in a cage at the meeting, I'd have a wank but still wouldn't vote for her. Even though I knew her at Oxford.

Anonymous said...

"Meanwhile, well done guys, the general level of gross speak has backfired- sorry!"

You are a humourless prude.

Anonymous said...

Michael Crick said he voted for Jane Ellison.

Speaks volumes...

Anonymous said...

to be fare Cleverly wasn't too clever in 2005 either. +0.3% when London was seeing some massive pro-Tory swings is a poor performance.

Anonymous said...

Ellison Chosen for Battersea:

Jane Ellison will turn Battersea blue with delight with a forest of newly planted Tory Trees at the next General Election.

Well done Jane - you'll be welcome all hours at The Leather Bottle!!

As for you Louise, dear Bagpuss, you take the breath away and will certainly live to win another day in a another place....keep sparkling sparkles.
