Those who post crazy comments on wingnut blogs/websites are known as Freepers. Pam Spaulding http://www.pamspaulding.com/weblog/ and Pandagon www.pandagon.net have some super examples of such nuttery. Keep up the good work Guido, don't you go moderating yourself now!

I hate to be anal... What am I saying? I love to be anal:

Surely the seasons are part of a climate, rather than examples of climate change? The term global warming has fallen out of favour because it doesn't reflect some of the chaotic and hard to predict possible climate change scenarios. For example, one theory is that melting ice at the north pole could shut down the gulf stream and actually make britain colder. We are on the same latitude as Moscow, but warm ocean currents keep out climate temperate.

I'm sure this fails your wit test, but I reckon his only a moonbat on two counts.

Not only was 'Folk Lore' not a senator in 1980 but the number of climate boffins around at that time who subscribed to the myth of global warming could have been counted on your dick. Reason? The popular science scare used to shaft reasearch council funds was the 'New Ice Age' (you see world climate actually cooled bewteen 1940-70).

For the anoraks amongst you the first mention of human assisted global warming in the UK was March 5th 1984 at the University of East Anglia.

But of course if Gore beat Berners-Lee to the internet it would be a piece of piss to scoop the University of Easy Access wouldn't it now?

Oy, Guido, I don't mind the label but there's a reason American sites list things as NSFW (not safe for work). You can be fired on the spot for looking at a naughty picture, whether you intended to or not.

For the record, I did link to you, just with a warning. My reader would not have been happy if he'd received a pink slip (P45 equivalent) for clicking on the link.

Yours on a wing and a nut,
Iain

Climate change took away our glaciers round here and left us with green hills and a valley with a river running through it...............oh for those days thousands of years ago when all was covered in ice.

Where were you David - saving us from the post-Ice Age future ?

"Progressives" want to turn the Clock back !

(Sigh)

Iain Stuart Murray, better known as ISM, is a wanker rather than a wonk. He moved to the Great Satan about the time that I came to live in bloody Mexico, but whereas I try to avoid saying things like "orale" and "andale" he is quite proud of having gone native.

ISM is about 10 years younger than me, and we were friends for many years after university. He went weird during the early stages of the war against Iraq and started censoring his Yahoo discussion group. Given that it only had about 40 members this was probably a mistake - not the first he's made.

People back home blamed it all on his rather nasty wife, but I told him to get stuffed and haven't spoken to him since then.

I would be dubious about anything that he writes these days.

Wingnut,

What does that tell you about the kulturkampf in the land of the free?

Commissars controlled the livelihoods of dissidents in Soviet times, corporate bosses the drones of American capitalism.

Obsessive West Wing fans are also often referred to as wingnuts. Fairly few of them seem to be rabid right-wingers though ...

Isn't that like the Yanks to give the same word two opposite meanings.

I am pretty sure that Richard Nixon used to regulalry trot out the "Chinese for Crisis is a mixture of danger and opportunity" aphorism , long before Gore

ISM was at University with Owen Barder and Stephen Twigg. Enough to turn anyone wingnut I would have thought.

To the anonymous smartarse from 2.29 this morning: Berners-Lee created the Web, not the Internet. Sigh...

Anonymous - you said the first mention of human assisted global warming in the UK was 1984.

Not quite. Svante Arrhenius suggested burning coal would (eventually) cause a greenhouse effect leading to global warming in 1896 in his paper "On the Influence of Carbonic Acid in the Air Upon the Temperature of the Ground." Philosophical Magazine 41: 237-76.
(mind you, he lived in Sweden, so he thought it would be a good thing to warm up by a couple of degrees). Oh, and Philosophical Magazine is a British one.

So clearly not new in 1894.

Wasn't new in 1980 either - by 1979, when the first World Climate Conference was held in Geneva, the scientific belief was more in the way of global warming, whatever the public were scaring themselves with at the time.

Three years ago, I was sacked for blogging, Guido. No need to lecture me on the insecurities of certain American managers.

Are you trying to make a subtle statement with that Ann Summers dildo ad, Guido?

(Not just in reference to the last paragraph, either :P )

f##k saving the planet Miliband, for your first trick, how about saving English farmers , who are currently still owed some £700 million and, in many cases, in desperate financial straights.

Another example of nulabs rural genocide policy.

I have to agree with Dr Maybe. At school in the 1970s we had text books which described the greenhouse effect, and the dangers that excess carbon being released into the atmosphere would have in terms of raising average global temperatures.

If it was in my school text book in 1977 or 1978 then the idea must have been around a pretty long time.
