Never mind about that.

What's happened to Recessmonkey?

The site's been down for days.

Has he joined the Tories?

Anonymous said...

Clearly a shift, their new campaign against the EU and Human Rights is another example, praising Cameron for being willing to scrap it.

I've been able to access Recess Monkey's site, but I suspect he's too depressed about the wheels falling off Mr Tony's wagon to want to blog very much.

"too depressed about the wheels falling off Mr Tony's wagon"

I assure you that us writers at RM are not too concerned about Blair's posible, soon to be, drive off Big Ben.

Plus it was news to me that all public sector workers stop at 60.

Has noone worked out that if you delay the date of pension pay out you increase the period of pension pay in which increases Govt revenues.

With NIC being second only to Income Tax as a revenue stream this is a nice little earner. With private pensions and public-sector AVCs being lost in Equitable Life (where lots of public sector AVCs were invested) and Brown's larceny in pension funds this has funded the NuLab show for the past 9 years.- if the old codgers can keep paying into the system they canbe offered jobs shoe-shining for Wlick Willie MPs retiring at 50 like the Ruth Kellys and Millibands of the future

Anyone taking bets on the exact day the sun will "come out" for Dave?

Recess Monkey is OK!

Lets see how long this lasts...
Lord George Robertson was a close personal friend of Thomas Hamilton of Dunblane infamy and personally helped him to obtain a firearm certificate that gave him access to the weapons he used to murder those children.
Those are facts and not libellous, Robertson visited Hamilton's home on many occasions, I wonder why?
And Jonathan Powells credit card details popped up in embarrassing circumstances.

Pensions Schmensions, this country will have collapsed, gone up in smoke or submerged under the atlantic by the time current 20odd yr olds come to retire, so why bother pretending pensions for them matter. Guns and life raft provision are the real issues, not how much you can hobble down to collect at the none existent post office in 30yrs time.

Murdoch is a shrewd businessman but not psychic. There is certainly a wind of change at the Sun, maybe he is just edging his bets, Wade’s departure and his choice of replacement will be the litmus test for conversion.

Robertson served as Labour Member of Parliament for Hamilton (1978-99) Blair gave him a peerage, (very cheap back then)

Stan Bull said...

Murdo is rightly waiting to see how the choreography of the Labour succession actually pans out over the next year or two. Hopefully, there will be lots of bloody civil war. Murdo will doubtless be keeping a beady eye on young DC's progress or lack thereof. But my money's on The Sun swinging back to the Tories.
Let's face it - Scottish overlord Gordo is not exactly in for an extended public honeymoon if he ever actually gets to No 10. Why should The Sun alienate its English base?

*Guido old chap, there's a lot of unsubstaniated stuff about George Robertson above. Legally speaking.....

Anonymous said...

As far as I know, Hamilton was a constituent of Robertson's and hardly a bosom buddy.

Anonymous said...

Murdoch knows that when Blair retires and Brown takes over the Labour polls will be even worse than they are now. He is just moving with the electorate and is starting to make his changes.

well.. lets not be to unfair on old blighty, there are many countries that could be in dire straits in 30 yrs time, for a start poor old maldives could well be Atlantis MK2, Holland and France should be interesting as they could be well and truly Islamified. Gaddafi last week said in the next fifty yrs Europe will fall to islam. The UK will be so over populated, crime ridden and dysfunctional hence record numbers of 'indigenous' brits jumping ship now, but many are just jumping out of the chip pan into the fire by heading to some dodgy destinations.

Never mind saving for a pension, save up and buy a disused cold war Nuclear bunker and regulary add tins of beans and mineral water.

"in 30 years time, a lot of Spain will be desert - while we'll have vineyards again in southern England."

But what the hell are 70 million souls going to eat? Domestic agriculture is already in its death throws with Ruth Kelly about to administer extreme unction; 30 years from now the world will be at least 20 years on the downside of 'peak oil' making the importing of everything we eat by sea or air an increasingly untenable proposition; and that takes no account of the extent to which world food production is dependent upon hydrocarbon-based ferilisers and fast vanishing fossil aquifers; or the inevitable conflicts to secure access to what remains of the oil (What do you think Iraq is all about - making the world safe for democracy ho ho ho - pull the other one, it's got bells on).

Nope - it's going to get ugly - and tied to the fate of the US the way we are, with negligible capacity to feed ourselves, like as not it's going to get VERY ugly. Welcome to the real world.

Ghost of humphrey the cat says

er...Charles Martel old bean, where are you going to put VINEYARDS in the south of England when all available farmland is earmarked for vast ugly crowded toytown estates!!??

Migration watch say
immigration is in fact the largest single primary factor requiring 65,000 houses to be built each year – equivalent to a city the size of Peterborough every 12 months. That amounts to 1.5 million over the period 2003 – 2026, or very nearly a third of the total new households.

http://www.migrationwatchuk.org/pressreleases/pressreleases.asp?dt=01-March-2006

The last thing im thinking of is a pension....but buy to let might be a lucrative option, however I cant even afford to buy a house for myslef so i rule myslef out of that one.

Hamilton wasn't a constituent of Robertson's. Robertson lived in Dunblane. I have vague memories that Hamilton lobbied Robertson over some issue because he lived so near to him - rather than near his constituency which was in Hamilton - and was known to be an MP. Can't recall what the exact connection was but they weren't bosom buddies like you say - more like politician bothered by an obsessive crank.

More catastrophist bullshit. We've heard and seen it all before - Malthus, fatalistic Marxism, eugenics, 'The New Ice Age' (these climatologists have some neck don't they?)global metal/mineral depletion, Y2K, SAR's, Avian Flu and YOU KNOW WHAT...

Sabretche, the disasters we face are not the figments of the (pseudo) scientific imagination they are political and are born of envy, greed and INFERIORITY.

And believe me FRANCE, RUSSIA & CHINA have much to feel inferior about.

we rely on other countries for our energy
our coal mines are flooded
we dont grow enough food to feed ourselves,we could hardly feed ourselves 60 years ago and our farming industry is a shadow of wht it was then, i say the future is eastern europe, plenty of energy, plenty of farmers, GB is fucked, im going to leave it to all these lovely vibrant diverse shop keepers and nigerian tax collectors and see what a fine job they make of the place.
And the other minister was supposedly mandelsohn, though that could just be because he is gay, but he does look like the type doesnt he?

It's easy to tell Anthropomorphic Global Warming is a scam, rather than a science.

Proper Science would produce a list of changes (good and bad), the melons running the Global Warmin' scam only sell doom.

Anonymous said...

They also keep making it up as they go along.

Ten years ago we were 0.5C away from disaster and now we are 3.0C closer to doom.

Ten years ago the Jeremiahs were predicting a warmer WETTER climate in the UK but now the current DROUGHT in the South East of the UK is down to global warming.

Ten years ago global warming meant milder winters for the UK but now climate forcing will disrupt the Gulf Stream to such an extent that the UK and much of Europe may resemble an Arctic wasteland for almost six months of the year.

Of course such extreme climatic events are just a symptom of global warming. Even the next Ice Age...

Guido,
Do feel free to exercise a bit of editorial authority. There's a right lot of irrelevant, if not demented balderdash on this particular thread....

Sabretache said...

"....the disasters we face are not the figments of the (pseudo) scientific imagination. They are political and are born of envy, greed and INFERIORITY."

Spot on - except for the bracketted 'pseudo' - and with politics as an ongoing effort to deal with reality by inhabiting cloud cuckoo land.

Global warming may or may not be pseudo science. Peak oil, aquifer depletion and our total dependance on both is not. Only takes a bit of honest open-minded inquiry to see we have a big BIG problem - but you won't here that from the politicos - gotta win the next election dontchknow. All that envy, greed and INFERIORIY - not to mention armed to the teeth aggressive self-interest masquerading as 'making the world safe for democracy', simply ensures that prospects for addressing it in a coherent fashion are close to zero.

But never mind. Don't worry, be happy and let's squabble about the trivia instead - it's always worked before.

Does anyone seriously suppose we would be in Iraq if its main natural resource was lettuce and tommatoes?

Anonymous said...

Indeed there is. But still, there's some sense. For one thing, Canada is now producing perfectly acceptable wines, which is counter-intuitive to the highest degree if you're an anti-global warming dogmatist. I know, I'm from Canada, and my formerly favorite Californian wines are now displaying signs of having ripened under climates that are too hot.

Also, Ghost of humphrey the cat is correct when he says that nobody currently working (and possessed of intelligence) counts on a pension. Not a chance. I had one, once, and when I came down with cancer they essentially insisted I bleed it off to pay for the drugs. Now I'm middle-aged and about as well-off as a 20-yr-old.

Sabretche,

if you stopped gabbling and started analysing you might start making sense.

Remember what Feudal Britain's timber crisis led to - the Industrial Revolution. Unlike then, there are plenty of existing alternatives to oil (in the 17th century steam power had to be developed first in order to make old Roman coal and ore mines viable again).

You infer that it is politics (and not the depletion of resources)that is the trivial issue. You've got your knickers on the wrong way round Sabretche. We only appear to have an oil 'crisis' because we have a global political crisis and one that most people (including, to their eternal shame, many political commentators)are largely unaware of.

The US went into Irag partly because some oil producing nations were being encouraged not to sell it oil, Venezuela being the most visible example.

The US sabre rattles at Iran because it knows the forces at work behind that regimes 'civilian' nuclear power programme.

And the US bridles at the IPCC's 'requests' for it to reduce carbon emissions because, surprise, surprise it will stunt long term economic growth. Ever considered that economic sabotage might just be the main imperative behind global warming 'science' Sabretche?

Ever considered in fact that the whole shabang is about France Russia and China (and their little empires the EU and the UN) toppling the US from its perch, Sabretche?

It's funny that you probably haven't. A century or so ago another English speaking nation ruled over much of the globe. Just like now a cabal of nations plotted to overthrow this empire. The end result was WW1.

Just remember Sabretche that virtually every single 'crisis' fed to you by the BBC and other left/liberal wanker news organisation are just propaganda stunts designed to bring forward the day that we kow-tow to Beijing.

Think about that when you next bite into your prawn crackers...

Sabretache said...

Try googling 'peak oil' and spend just half an hour or so on the results. It should enable you disentangle cause from effect and dump some of that ideological baggage.

and beyond WWI..........and it was connivance of politicians like Ramsay MacDonald playing Foreign Secretary and his pacifism that allowed Hitler to re-arm - Anglo-German Naval Treaty 1935 - and left the Royal Navy with ageing capital ships.

They say the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, but the politically naive have a way of getting us to Hell. They gnaw away at the foundations until the structure starts to lurch and then they complain about the bits holding the sturcture together hoping for another bite.

Sabretache said...

Still - most seem to agree that to rely on the promise of a State pension (unless you happen to be an employee/dependent of the State) is akin to whistling in the wind.

Guido is right. The seven year work gap together with other public sector pensions largesse is a recipe for burgeoning resentment that will have to be tackled.

The small matter of whether or not it may be little more than an academic footnote (and a trivial one at that) 30 years from now need not concern us - for the purposes of more important matter of winning elections that is.

AntiCitizenOne said...

sabretche,
I disagree with you on peak oil and climate change. But you are correct about "state" pensions, they are totally unsustainable. More like a parent selling their own children into slavery.

Anonymous said...

"But you are correct about "state" pensions, they are totally unsustainable. More like a parent selling their own children into slavery."

All pensions are like that. The children are either enslaved through taxes or, in the private sector, through corporate profits dispersed to pension funds. Or they can be enslaved through paying off a mortgage on a house they bought from an older person who made a huge capital gain. Or they can be enslaved through paying off student loans for a dubious degree, their top-up fees going straight into the universities pension fund.

Increased logevity not only reduces annuity income, it postpones the day when the enslaved child is liberated by inheritance.

Sabretache said...

"..... doing the rounds about 5 years ago that allowed you to draw out all your pension money as a "loan" from a company that was then folded, buy gold.."

Going at knock down prices around that time too it was - courtesy of that clever Scots Chancellor of ours. He's cost the exchequer about £3.4 billion with that little wheeze, at todays price - and counting.

AntiCitizenOne said...

Slavedriver,

You miss the point. There IS no pension pot in the state fund.

Anonymous said...

Anticitizenone - there's no such thing as a pension pot. Pensions are either paid out of current taxes or they are paid out of current dividends - from the perspective of child slavery it is the same. They are both equally dependent on a social contract between the payer and the recipient. Before you accuse other posters of missing the point just remember that you are a complete aresehole - indeed, the arsehole's arsehole. Quite an achievement after a week around here.
