They say that his case was considered for deportation, and the decision was taken that as he was from Somalia, he coupdn't be deported so proceedings were halted.

So, this is technically a totally different story to the current Charles Clarke one.

It should be irrelevant whether one of the 1,000 has actually committed a serious crime. The fact that there was the potential for it to happen should be enough.
Mightn't we have a Human Rights situation here - ie that the Home Office might have wished to deport but the Human Rights Act made it impossible?

You can't deport someone to where there is no functioning government or legal system.

Of course you can. You use the same method of delivery as those cunning chaps down at Hereford... C130 at 5,000 ft, open door plus two burly load masters to assist the deportee's exit; oh and a static line parachute.
And if the Human Rights lobby kicks up a stink, you can even train the deportee how to use the chute before he goes.
No mess, no bureaucratic paperwork and no hassles with stroppy local authorities. Plus the RAF gets valuable training. Sounds like a bargain to me.

Yes but the Human Rights Act then conflicts with the 1951 Convention on Refugees which removes any obligation to give asylum to those engaged in criminal activity.
Further, why did Labour put the ECHR into English Law without strengthening the National Security Clause ? surely they could have issued a Statutory Interpretation Guide together with the Act ?
I have never understood why these Bills are not framed in Committee and the Judges are not issued with the Committee Report so they can deal with contentious issues ex ante.

Apologies Anonymous - "Civis Britannicus sum" and all that. It is just when you experience one dead policeman in Leeds in 2003 and another in adjoining Bradford in 2005 you get a little irritated that one has already slipped the collective memory.
Had these police officers been armed and properly trained I don't think either would now be dead because armed officers approach differently - and of course there were fewer cases of criminals enjoying life "after Life" than nowadays.

British police officers should be armed and rigourously trained in gun use.
