O/T, but I was slightly amused that one of the seven signatories on the EDM below was a certain John Hemming MP...

Ok so the Liberals issue dodgy election leaflets and their treasury guru cannot count past a million, what is new? One could have made the same statement for most of the past 20 years. Guido: what is the new hot rumour about his smugness Mr Who, please do tell?

On another note, it is pleasing to see that Huhne used the "Its a straight choice" leaflet at the election given that his Tory opponent in Eastleigh was (according to Iain Dale) gay. Simon Hughes is not the only hypocritical scumbag running to lead the oh so tolerant Libs.

Where did Iain Dale write that?

Oh - found it in the comments to his post today.

I guess the whole Labour party in Scotland must be homophobic too as they used "it's a straight choice" in the 2005 election: http://www.scottishlabour.org.uk/ge2005

Mark P: Labour actually said "It is a straight choice between Labour and the Tories." That is rather different from what Mr Hughes & Mr Huhne appear to have done when personally campaigning against candidates who were brave enough to be honest about being gay. Unlike, er....

Even the scumbag Hughes himself now admits that his campaign to win was bigoted and unpleasant. Trying to defend the Liberals on this count is, like the Liberal Democrat Party itself, a lost cause. If you are trying to suggest that others have stooped as low as Hughes etc it would be better if you had some real facts.

What you Libs fail to comprehend is that having preached at everyone else in a most sanctimonious manner on every issue under the sun, when your leaders are caught with their Pantsdown, in whatever context, it is just rather funny.

Now Guido: what is the new rumour about the smug millionaire and former advocate of the drug culture, Mr Huhne?

Rememberinka? There's this thing called the Big Lie. You keep repeating it, I'll be charitable and assume you honestly believe it, but both leaflets were of the nature of "straight choice between" that you let Labour off from.

It was the Independent Labour candidate that ran the bigotry at Bermondsey, and Hughes only said he regretted aspects of it, he did not say what you say he did in regards to it.

Feel free to keep repeating that which is demonstrably untrue though.

Guido; how much money d'you reckon Huhne's got? Not that I care too much, as long as Hughes doesn't win I don't think it matters too much either way.

The point is that "it's a straight choice" is a perfectly normal English phrase, used in lots of different situations - and by lots of different politicians of all parties; it doesn't have a homophobic meaning.

Just like comlaining that a piece of metal is bent isn't some snide innuendo either.

There are gay Scottish Lib Dems - so if you think "straight choice" is homophobic, why not attack Labour for using it?
